The Chess Institute hosted the Toronto International 2012, which ran from July 15 to 20 this year. Over one hundred people competed in the tournament, held at the Annex Chess Club.
After 7 rounds, visiting International Grandmaster Wesley So from the Philippines took the Crown section with 6.0/7. A Chess Institute of Canada instructor and arbiter extraordinaire, Geordie Derraugh, won the U2200 section with the same score. The U1900 section was won by Rodrigo Oliveira (the 2011 Canadian Open U1600 winner) with a perfect 7.0/7. Finally, the closely contested U1600 section ended in a 3-way tie for first – Paul Buzdon, Hooshang Abbarin, and Robert Li all scored 5.5/7.
