Coming Soon: Basics for Chess Parents

Adult and child playing chess together.

Parents! If you have little to no knowledge of chess, but still want to join your kids on their chess journey, we’ve got a program for you!

The Chess Institute of Canada is proud to introduce its Basics for Chess Parents program — a low-cost online course that will get you up to speed so you can play with your kids as they learn.

  • Chess fundamentals: how the pieces move, how to play a complete game
  • Elementary concepts like check, checkmate, and piece valuation
  • Some simple openings and endgames

All this, in classes where you can meet and get to know other parents whose children are on the same path!

This is intended to get parents new to the game up and running. It will not make you an expert — in fact, your kids might still quickly outgrow you (we’re very good teachers).

Once it’s up and running, it will be available as an add-on when you sign your kids up for chess clubs or online classes. For now, we’re adding names to a notification list to let folks know when we launch.
