The Ted Winick Memorial Fund

Chess Institute Founder Ted Winick created a charity that teaches people how to make good moves in life.

Since 1998, the Chess Institute of Canada (CIC) has strategically taught chess in in-class and extra-curricular programs in more than 100 schools, as well as online.

The organization was the brainchild of founder Ted Winick. CIC’s roots sprang from the after-school chess club Ted ran at his children’s elementary school in the 1990s. As he taught children how to play chess, he saw how his students sometimes applied their chess skills to their everyday lives. Wanting to enforce this, Ted developed a way to intentionally teach how they can live better lives by always productively focusing their attention, weighing possible consequences of future moves, learning from mistakes, and having consideration and respect for others.

He taught them how to apply critical thinking skills to be better problem-solvers; focus and block out distractions; and how to both win and lose with dignity. And he saw his students bloom – gaining self-confidence and improving their emotional self-regulation.

“CIC’s goal goes beyond making people better chess players. We are building better people.”
– CIC Founder Ted Winick

In the memory of our founder Ted Winick, who passed away in 2019, we invite you to join Chess Institute of Canada as we too grow and learn, finding new ways to impart these valuable life lessons to youth – and soon to people of all ages – across Canada.

With the support of Ted and Heidi Winick’s adult children Maxie, Jordan, and Kailyn, Chess Institute of Canada has created the Ted Winick Memorial Fund to help Chess Institute of Canada face immediate growing pains, and build a strong, expansive future for its Chess to Life programs.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 in Ted’s memory.
Be a part of CIC’s future by making your donation in memory of Ted!

For all donations of $20 or more, donors will receive a charitable tax receipt, with our warmest thanks.  With your permission, we will gratefully acknowledge all persons donating $1,000 or more on our website at the level they have given.
