More Than Chess

At CIC, we believe that chess is more than just a game – it is a powerful tool for teaching critical life skills that can help individuals thrive in all areas of their lives. That’s why we have integrated a comprehensive life skills education curriculum into our chess programming, designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, cooperation, negotiation, decision-making, self-management, resilience, communication, respect for others, empathy, participation, taking on challenges, making connections, perspective-taking, focused self-control, and self-directed engagement.

Our instructors are trained to incorporate these skills into every aspect of our chess lessons, from teaching problem-solving strategies to encouraging cooperation and teamwork during gameplay.

Participants learn to think strategically, consider multiple perspectives, and communicate effectively with others – all essential skills for success in the 21st century.

By integrating life skills education into our chess curriculum, we are empowering individuals of all ages and backgrounds, everyone, to develop the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience. We are proud to offer this unique approach to chess education, and we are grateful to our donors for making it possible. Thank you for supporting our mission to help individuals thrive through the power of chess and life skills education.

Your Donations at Work

At CIC, we take great pride in putting your donations to work in ways that truly make a difference in the lives of our program participants. Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we are able to provide high-quality chess programs that inspire and empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Children who participate in our Online and Extracurricular Clubs develop critical thinking skills and improve their academic performance.
  • Seniors who attend specialized programs find a sense of connection and belonging, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness.
  • Individuals with disabilities who participate in our adaptive chess clubs gain confidence and social skills, improving their overall quality of life.
  • Families who attend our Community Hubs and Tournaments bond over the game and create lasting memories together.

These are just a few of the many ways that your donations are making a positive impact in our community. We are committed to using every dollar you donate wisely and effectively, to create the greatest possible benefit for those we serve.

Our Sponsors

The Marvin Rosenhek Community Chess Fund

CIC expresses deep appreciation for the Rosenhek family’s generous creation of a memorial fund in honour of Marvin Rosenhek (1929-2021), a lifelong avid chess player and Montréal lawyer of 65 years. The fund will support school and community educational programs directly. Marvin enjoyed spending time with family, nature, beekeeping, bridge, and spy novels, and continued playing chess with the Canadian Correspondence Chess Association into his nineties. Marvin will be remembered fondly by the CIC community for his passion and dedication to the game.

Spirit of Math

CIC gratefully acknowledges the generous $6,000 marketing/research sponsorship from Spirit of Math Central Toronto Campus. This sponsorship is a natural fit, as math and chess have inherent connections and many CIC program attendees are potential students for Spirit of Math’s math enrichment programs. As an innovative leader in after-school mathematics education, Spirit of Math’s 40-campus global community successfully addresses the needs of high-performing downtown Toronto students and their families.
