Chess Institute partners with CodeNinjas for one-of-a-kind tournament

Perseverance, good judgment, sporting behaviour — these are all attributes that the Chess Institute of Canada (CIC) shares through its Chess for Life curriculum. These proven rewards for chess studies will soon be augmented by STEM, programming and more — via a partnership with the South Etobicoke location of CodeNinjas.

The first CodeNinjas/Chess Institute tournament is happening on April 28 at Code Ninjas South Etobicoke (742 The Queensway). This rapid (15+10) Swiss tournament will have kids playing four fun and exciting rounds of chess over five hours, with prizes, medals and ribbons for participants.

“We’re excited to be working with CodeNinjas South Etobicoke on an initial tournament partnership, with an eye to seeing how we can grow this relationship in the future,” says Nick Grachev, Outreach Manager for the Chess Institute.

“As our name suggests, CodeNinjas is a leading program for kids to help them learn STEM, coding basics, and more,” says Sapan Jot, the owner of CodeNinjas South Etobicoke. “Chess is very popular among our students — it’s been a way to teach children STEM basics like logic, sequences and programming for generations. We’re excited to be bringing the power of the world’s most popular board game to CodeNinjas for a day of both fun and learning.”

“This is a great match for CIC and for our students,” Grachev says. “CIC is already the nation’s leading provider of life skills through chess, and connecting to CodeNinja’s network of energetic, motivated and enthusiastic STEM and coding coaches is terrific news for us.”
